My name is Lori Crosby, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (Lic #89606). I specialize in helping children (ages 3+) and adolescents who are struggling with grief and loss (e.g., the death of a loved one, divorce, separation). Children who experience loss are at higher risk for mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or substance abuse. Left untreated, these problems can worsen and persist into adulthood. The good news is that help is available!

My mission is to bring healing to children and teenagers through the power of play. As a Registered Play Therapist, I use both Client Centered Play Therapy and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help children process trauma and express feelings. This provides opportunities for grieving, helps children to understand the loss and form new attachments, and restores a sense of control. I also teach caregivers how to parent in a way that helps protect children from the risk of long-term mental illness following a traumatic loss.

Common effects of loss on children and adolescents:

  • Young children may believe that they caused the loss. They may also experience attachment problems or regress to an earlier state of dependency.
  • Following a loss, children may experience difficulties with schoolwork and peer relationships.
  • Adolescents may come to believe that they have lost all control over their lives, resulting in suicidal thoughts or antisocial behavior.
  • The younger the child is at the time of the loss, the more likely the problems are to persist long-term. Early intervention is essential!
